Gabriel Götze has been part of the REM Consult team since 2026. He works at the intersection of spatial sciences, regional planning and policy advice, with a particular focus on strategic regional development, governance and structural change in rural and peripheral areas. For the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR), he provides academic support for nationwide research and funding programmes, contributes to the development of strategic concepts and translates empirical findings into instruments suited to political and administrative practice.
His professional interests focus in particular on the question of how regions can remain capable of taking action or regain this capacity under conditions of demographic change, economic transformation and limited resources. In this context, he examines the role of strategic regional development concepts, inter-municipal cooperation, the management of funding programmes, and the legal and institutional frameworks governing spatial development. Alongside his research support activities, he actively facilitates knowledge transfer between research, public administration and politics, including through the design of nationwide networking events and knowledge-transfer workshops.
Before joining REM Consult, Gabriel Götze worked at the Institut Raum & Energie from 2020 onwards. There, among other things, he contributed to the academic support of the BBSR’s “Active Regional Development” initiative, the development of Strategic Regional Development Concepts (RegioStrat), and research projects for the German Environment Agency on implementing binding land-take reduction targets within the framework of spatial planning. He also contributed to strategic recommendations for action concerning residential development in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. His responsibilities included analysing regional development processes, preparing recommendations for action and practical guidance, supporting model regions, and facilitating knowledge transfer between research, public administration, politics and planning practice.
Gabriel Götze studied Geography at the universities of Jena and Leipzig, as well as Urban Design and Local Planning (MSc) at TH Lübeck.
