MORPHEUS – Pharmaceutical Substances
Pharmaceutical substances increasingly compromise the Baltic Sea region’s water quality. Against this background MORPHEUS develops new approaches to counteract water pollution.
The MORPHEUS (Model Areas for Removal of Pharmaceutical Substances in the South Baltic) project partners work in four model regions in Germany, Sweden, Lithuania and Poland to reduce the level of pharmaceutical substances and to improve the quality of water. The project is based on different studies which detect pollution sources and propose potential technical approaches for the reduction of environmentally harmful substances. Within the project, trainings and a set of recommended actions are offered to staff and operators of sewage treatment plants as well as to decision-makers in the model regions concerned. In addition to this, the population shall be sensitised to the issue of pharmaceutical waste disposal to allow for pollution prevention. The project has a budget of 1.5 million Euros and is part of the Policy Area “Hazards” of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR).
