KISMET – Sustainable food environments

KISMET aims to change the ‘destiny’ and sustainably transform the currently unfavourable food system in cities and regions around the Baltic Sea. The project addresses challenges local and regional authorities face for realising more circular and sustainable food environments. Led by the City of Hamburg’s Authority for Economy and Innovation (Food Cluster Division), the KISMET partnership is made up of 13 partner organisations from seven Baltic Sea Region countries.

The transnationally experienced partners join forces with 15 associated organisations to tackle complex challenges associated with transforming sustainable food environments. The target group of the project is key to fields such as business promotion, health, procurement, food policy and environment. Therefore, KISMET aims to provide concrete instruments and tools for working better with 1. governance, 2. the demand-side and 3. the production side. These three components are part of the overall solution “Enabling Programme for Sustainable Food Environments” which is developed by the 13 project partners. It includes a mix of concrete different digital formats (tools, documents, scripts, videos, infographics, etc.).

8 Local Innovation Partnerships are established that form the backbone of the KISMET partnership for piloting the solutions. The 8 solutions are piloted by the target group represented by the project partners and associated organisations. The project further transfers the “Enabling Programme” to additional target groups via replicator/friendship cities to jointly implement and disseminate the solution. As a result, the target group will be better equipped to sustainably change consumer behaviour for good, create opportunities for circular economies, and make food chains and production more regional, allowing societies to take a big step toward carbon neutrality.

KISMET is co-funded by the Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme 2021-2027 and was approved in September 2022. REM Consult supported the lead partner with project application and development processes and since February 2023 has been commissioned to support with project and financial management and related communication activities as well.
